| Dimension Technologies Inc 3D 2015xls Virtual Window Follow up to the wheel | |
| (Review by MS, April 13, 2001) |
Conclusion
Wrapping up this review, the one overwhelming notion is that the Dimension Technology Inc 3D display constitutes a major milestone in computer technology. DX8 and all new hardware implementations as featured by the GeForce3 are one thing but a true 3D display is the one huge step that makes standard gaming take a quantum leap towards virtual reality. One must not forget that the current display is the first of its kind and, thus, a device still in its infancy, however, despite some minor drawbacks as the requirement to maintain a relatively fixed position in front of the screen, this is the first device that, without additional glasses, provides a true 3D sensation.
Cost
Priced at US$1,699 the DTI3D Virtual Window appears to be a rather hefty investment, however, at present, the company offers an instant $200 rebate, bringing the price down to $1,500. In this regard, it is necessary to take into account the price for a comparable, high quality LCD display, which is still in the order of some $600-800, and, thus, the total overhead shrinks substantially. Also keep in mind that the viewable area is 15", meaning that the size of the screen is roughly equivalent to a 17" CRT display. All in all, people have spent more money on Rambus for much lower returns. In addition, there are applications, particularly biomedical imaging for research and for online conferencing of surgical procedures that appear to be custom tailored towards the DTI3D display, not to mention some not-to-be-mentioned-again adult entertainment. In view of the overall benefits, the overhead appears to be small compared to the potential benefits, at least for those that can afford it.
Quotables
As a neuroscientist who has spent over 20 years in vision research, my verdict regarding the DTI3D display is that this is one of the few new technology developments that provide true novelty by bridging neuroscience, bioengineering and consumer electronics to raise the level of home computing one huge step up towards virtual reality. At this point, the impact of the inventive design on future gaming and imaging techniques can only be guessed but I trust, it will be enormous.
Epilogue
Some time ago another 3D device was invented and, later, revolutionized the world, it is now known as the wheel (hehehe).
