Hot Offers for Gforce

 Gainward Ultra/750XP Golden Sample
The Red Devil
(Review by tide, May 13, 2002)
Picture Quality

One thing I noticed was that there were some shadows casted by the right vertical border of any window. With the GeForce2 Ultra in the same system, these "borders" did not occur. Gainward was not able to reproduce this effect which makes it likely that this artifact is specific to the one sample we had or else the particular combination of graphics adapter and monitor used.

Ghosts like the ones described usually point towards signal reflection in HF cables or connectors or improper termination of signals within the circuitry regardless of whether it is within the graphics card or even the monitor. In dubio pro reo, most likely, the issue is related to the monitor. Otherwise, the image quality is excellent with a crisp picture, good contrast and vivid colors.

Standby?

Somewhat unusual was what happened every time the system went into standby (VGA-OFF) mode. Whenever the system woke up again, the graphics cooler went straight into turbo mode. Interestingly, the fan did not slow down again unless the system was restarted. It is unclear, which parameter is responsible for the regulation of the fan rpm so we won't speculate further. Moreover, compared to the overall noise level of any standard cooling setup, the additional noise of the graphics cooler is negligible.

Some Comments about Benchmarks

All benchmarks were run under WindowsME using the Detonator 28.32 drivers included on the Gainward CD. The system was restarted between the different benchmarks and games. If results were not consistent with the general picture, the benchmark was rerun to either confirm the result or else correct the error.
