Award or no award, that is here the question
(Review by MS; Sept. 16, 1999)

When it comes down to who is who in the graphics adapter business, there are a few names that stick out. There is ATi and S3, the two giants, there is 3dfx, the underdog and then there is this other Canadian company that may not have the volume of the big ones but that sure has something else. Or should we say somebody else? Who I am talking about is none other than an extremely charming lady who goes by the name of Andrea (what a lovely name) and keeps my inbox filled with incessant press releases from Matrox.

Why is this worth mentioning? For once, I have more corporate info on Matrox than on any other manufacturer in the world and where others are sleeping, Matrox is already masterminding the next hype about one of their upcoming products. Public Relations is the name of the game and no other company has hamstered anything comparable in terms of bona fide awards for a not yet released product as Matrox. Sounds like a little bit on the slick side but in the business world there are no holds barred. More importantly, R"D is expensive unless you are of those companies who build on the established and contend themselves with a modified reference design. Thus, when it comes to raising the necessary funds for successfully developing new technology, PR and market research becomes an utmost important corporate branch. There is more than one way of skinning a cat but in order to convince the investors, you have to promote your own product. Needless to say that corporate earnings can help out here and this is another domain where Matrox looks extremely good.

Can all of this possibly be based on hypes? Very unlikely so, at some point, reality strikes and without a product to back up the claims, enough companies have taken the nose dive into oblivion. But let’s get back to the awards. By now, the latest Matrox graphics adapter a.k.a. G400 has earned over 100 awards from all kinds of reviews. Typing this, I finally get the drift why I keep getting emails but, so far, no corporate-sponsored G400 has found its way to LostCircuits. It must be the fact that we don’t give awards, certainly not on a bona fide basis. Well, we really don’t need to because we can get the cards ourselves but we could possibly also make an exception. However, awards don’t come cheap and so lets take a look at what the G400 is all about and what kind of award we could possibly come up with.
