OpenGL Games

Quake II

Despite the fact that the Create! allows the selection of application specific OpenGL drivers in the Control Panel, there is no doubt that both QuakeII and III are its Achilles heel. Not that the games run really slow but for the dedicated LAN gamer, it may simply not be enough. On the other hand, once again, there seems to be simply more detail on the screen than with other cards, regardless of where you look. Both partially relate to the fact that simplified textures in the form of the 8-bit texture palette need to be disabled, otherwise, QuakeII runs in psychedelic colors. Interesting but not necessarily what the doctor ordered. The Crusher demo further slowed down considerably in consecutive runs, making it necessary to exit and restart the game to obtain reproducible benchmarks. Waiting periods between the individual runs did not remedy this problem making heat an unlikely reason for the performance decay.

QuakeII Timedemo (t) and Crusher (c) frame rates for the Permedia3 Create! at 16 and 32bit color. Timedemo framerates for the Diamond Viper 770 Ultra at 16 bit are shown as comparison

Quake III Arena

QuakeIII Arena shows itself from its best side when it comes to image quality, the frame rates are borderline acceptable.
