    Worth the Upgrade?

We used our own Pier demo, recorded for the main purpose of stressing the graphics card. To make a long story short, the X1600 Pro produced severe visual artifacts in that in the parts of the demo with the highest payload on the GPU, some textures were simply skipped.

The display flipflopped between correctly rendering the bottom of the ocean (top) and simply ignoring it (bottom), potentially this could also be a wrong alpha transparency calculation for the reflected water surface.

Running through the water caused the bottom of the ocean to be displayed - or not - essentially, the gravel toggled in and out of the picture. A simple skipping of the textures would be somewhat disappointing but might go unnoticed by most users, but the first you see it -- then you don't display was plain and simply annoying. To be absolutely sure that this was not an issue with the system used, we ran the exact same benchmarks with the X800 Pro on the same setup with the result that none of the artifacts were apparent.

What is also interesting here is the difference in performance between the X1600 Pro and the X800 Pro, with the latter being approximately twice as fast.
