    Worth the Upgrade?
(Review by MS, March 6, 2006)
    ATI X1600 XT

    3DMark'06

We start with 3DMark06 for the simple reason that the composite score is a good example of how results can get skewed by their actual composition.

The X1600 Pro, while obtaining the lowest score is almost as fast as a single X850 XT PE. If this is a surprise, keep in mind that the composite score also weighs in the HDR/SM3.0 scores and that those benchmarks don't even run on the older architectures. Keep this in mind when looking at some marketing material.

If we look at the individual scores, the X1600 Pro suddenly takes a leap backwards

We see the exact same picture also in Firefly Forest

Overall, the SM2.0 tests show the X1600 at about 35% lower performance than a single X850 XT PE card.
