Sapphire RADEON X1950 GT 256 MB Crossfire
The Big Bang
...for the buck
Sample supplied by Sapphire
(Review by MS, March 13, 2007)

Tech Specs

The X1950 GT is a scaled-down version of the rest of the pack. This is obvious also just from the physical dimensions in that, for example, the cooler is a single-slot solution blowing from the front of the card to the back (rather than from the back to the front as in the case of the “Pro”). Unfortunately, the cooling fans are also overly noisy, especially, once the temperature increases and the fan gears up to faster operation. Even at idle, though, the noise levels are in the “uncomfortable” range, accompanied by a high-pitch whirring that appears to originate from the fan bearings and is especially annoying.

Under the hood, we have the same R570 GPU that is on duty in the X1950 Pro and just like in the latter, it features 12 ROPs with three pixel shaders each (for a total of 36 PS) and 8 Vertx shaders. The “GT” version is clocked at 500 MHz core frequency and a memory data rate of 1200 Mbps, achieved with GDDR3, whereas in the “Pro” version the core is running at 575 MHz and the memory is clocked at 1400 MHz.
