X800 GTO2 vs. RADEON X850XT

The Wolf

To make a long story short, the Sapphire RADEON X800 GTO2 is a wolf in sheep's clothes. As known by now by every insider, the GPU used is none else but the R480 usually found only in the X850XT. In the latter card, the core is running at 520 or 540 MHz for the standard or Platinum Edition, respectively. The memory used on the test board (and throughout the entire production series of the GTO2) is Samsung's GDDR3 in 1.6ns flavor, which should be good up to approximately 1100 MHz data rate.

The Sheep's Clothes

Amongst the unmistakable features of the XT 850 series was heat; and heat had to be taken care of through the usual dual PCI slot-consuming monstrosity of a heatsink. At first glance, the cooling solution of the Sapphire RADEON X800 GTO2 appears to be a bit skimpy but then, who would want to give it all away at first glance, moreover, there are aftermarket cooling kits available for those who really want to push things to the limit.

The Bundle

Who is in for a bundle of games included with the X800 GTO2 will be disappointed, there is a sampler CD with a bunch of free demos along with a copy of WinDVD and the mandatory driver CD - which concludes the software selection. In terms of hardware, the usual adapters for s-video and the DVI port are included and that's about it. Insiders don't need free games, though, they already have them. As with all Sapphire manuals, the current one is at the bottom end of what is tolerable, covering essentially the installation of the card in the computer with major emphasis on how to tighten the screws on the chassis - just kidding..
