 Tyan Tachyon G9700 Pro
Roses are red, violets are blue ..
(Review by MS, Jan 28, 2003)

The Bundle

The bundled hardware comprises the basic cables and connectors to support the multiple outputs and features one DVI to VGA connector, on composite and one s-video cable and one additional s-video-to-composite connector.

At One Glance

Hardware Monitoring and other Specialties..

One of the features advertised by Tyan is the built-in hardware monitoring capability but in this case we have to hold our breath. At least in the case of the sample we received, it was not implemented. As it turns out, the HW-monitoring-enabled cards are easy to spot since the fan connector uses three wires as opposed to the two (power and ground) in the review sample. Moreover, the fan connector will be moved to the "upper left" corner and the PCB itself will be longer, meaning that it will stick out in the back of the heat spreader.

Owing to the fact that there is no HW monitoring hardware in place, the software was not included either. Personally I don't really care since I have yet to see one utility that did not introduce a performance hit or stability problems if the hardware was pushed to its limits. From screenshots we know that the utility does monitor such factors as memory voltage, however, we don't know whether they are talking about VDD or VDDQ which we found to be slightly different. VDD (DDR memory core voltage) was measured at 2.802 V whereas VDDQ (I/O buffer voltage) was set at 2.932 V. For the record, the engine core voltage was set to 1.615 V in our sample compared to 1.5V on the original RADEON 9700.

Update: It turns out that the card we got was an earlier engineering sample, the HW Monitoring version is now shipping.

Other software includes ATi Catalyst drivers (newer versions are available on the various download sites) as well as WinDVD 4.0. Games are not included, which is ok.
