Hot Tachyons

 Tyan Tachyon G9700 Pro
Roses are red, violets are blue ..
(Review by MS, Jan 28, 2003)

Conclusion

When we first received the TACHYON G9700 Pro, it appeared that it would be just another Graphics card review, minus the features that offset the TACHYON from the rest of the gang. As it turns out, there is much more to the story than that. We have certainly been able to push the TACHYON all the way up to the claims made by Tyan and, with a few mods, that is, by applying the pencil trick around the voltage controller pins, we would probably be able to go even higher. But it is not really necessary.

Where does the TACHYON G9700 stand right now?

Yesterday, the GeForce FX was launched. ATi is preparing the launch of the next generation GPU a.k.a. R350 that'll take performance yet a few notches up. We look at the scores we got with the overclocked Tachyon and we look at the GeForce FX scores posted elsewhere and ... well, compare for yourself, everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

The Missing HW Monitoring

The one thing that is really missing from the Tachyon G9700 Pro as the one we received is the hardware monitoring. Some may bitch about it, others may not miss it at all but there is still the discrepancy between the specs and the real thing. There is still the possibility that we received a preproduction sample, though. In all honesty, we have yet to see any HW monitoring utility that will not cause performance degradation or introduce stability issues.

Update: The card, in fact, was an engineering sample, HW monitoring is available on production cards.

The Final Verdict

Overall the TACHYON G9700 delivered extremely impressive performance and overclocking capabilities and should be at the top of anybody's list for a high-end card that is available NOW!
