W3A6V0E and W4A2V0E Surround Sound System
Not quite average but a rather extraordinary experience
(Review by MS)

What could be more inspiring to write a review than having something that you really enjoy and that you want to share with the rest of the world. In this particular case, what I am talking about is my latest acquisition of audio equipment, the

WAVE 360/420 surround sound system

that I picked up on last weekend's computer fair.

Sure these "little" speakers are not made for the average desktop and neither is the subwoofer something that could be cramped under the average desk.

Still, I had the opportunity to compare the WAVE system side by side to the Altec Lansing ADA 305 system as well as to the Yamaha pyramide system. Suffice it to say that, at least on the very subjective basis of sound quality, there is a world of difference between these speakers with the WAVE being the most pleasant one to listen to.

Ok, I may not be the most competent audio reviewer in the world but audio speakers have always been one of my great loves (currently I am running even my TV over STAX ELF-S81 speakers driven by a Dynaco tube power amplifier and DB 6 preamp) and former audio speakers of mine have included top models of JBL, Magnat and Osterberg monitors. So, at least I think I have some idea of what a good speaker is supposed to sound like. My preference goes to speakers with highly transparent, dry and at the same time warm, colorful sound, irrespective of the actual frequency range and any offset from the neutral position of bass and treble almost sounds like a blasphemy to me.

Now, back to the speakers in question. They are not a brand name, even though the name WAVE is reminiscent of the famous alarm radio by Dr. Bose. As a matter of fact, the only information about the manufacturer that I have is that the speakers were made in Malaysia and that's where also the manual was printed.

The manual itself does not contain any technical specification that go beyond the advice to keep the speakers away from liquids and moisture and a diagram explaining the wiring and setup of the system with the primary output from the soundcard to the subwoofer which serves as interface for the signal to the satellites.
